Much like coffee, cashmere and wine, quality in cotton can vary greatly. Because of its ideal growing conditions, extra long staple length and hand harvesting (industrial harvesting of cotton tears the fibers, giving it a yellowish hue and scratchy texture, affecting the softness of the yarn and end-product garment), this Peruvian cotton is the world's finest, highly prized for its durability, exquisite softness and brilliant natural luster.
Coveted around the world for their superior qualities, there are 15 shades of this certified organic Peruvian colorgrown sliver. It is by far the most gorgeous native organic cotton that we have ever seen. This is a rare cotton offered through Fair Trade and at times, not all 15 colors will be available at all times. I will try to keep my listings current on availability and I do buy a lot whenever these wonderful offerings become available. Prices vary by color, type and rarity. Choose yours from the drop down box at upper right.
In addition to colors pictures, Sage is a shade lighter than the Rustic Avocado - a light misty green. Desert Mist is a shade lighter than Sage. Natural is a creamy color off white. Golden Cafe is a shade darker than Moka - Moka is a really pretty flesh toned color, almost a blush and it has some stripey variegation.
They include Extra Long Staple Pima (Vanilla Cream), Tanguis (Natural), Color Grown (Deepest Shades) & a Mix of Color Grown with Tanguis.
For a sampler containing all of the different colors available, choose the sampler offered in the drop down options box at upper right. Sampler pack includes:

GOTS Tumbleweed Color Grown
Qoperfina (a mix of Pima, tanguis & 3% ultra fine copper)

• The Pakucho colors included:
Deep Golden, Golden Cafe, Desert Mist
Deep Green, Forest Mist, Rustic Avocado, Sage
Rich Cinnamon, Chocolate, Moka
• 24mm (Pima 40mm) avg staple length
• The shades in the sliver do not go through an extra rinse process leaving the colors lighter
and/or more beige to golden hued for the greens. You can deepen the shades depending on
your need. Once an item is spun a small sample can be soaked in very hot water to deepen
the color. Drying in a machine can also deepen the color over time. Or you can leave it light
& wash in cool water, laying the item out to dry.
• Note: Crop years can produce varying shades. So when buying large amounts of the sliver
keep that in mind.
The Sliver is Fair Trade. This means that the people that grow the fiber to the processing of the end product get a more than fair wage and good working conditions. There are no slave wages or child exploitation. This is as important, if not more so, than the eco organic properties themselves.
Why is this cotton so highly desirable? "The earliest records of spinning date back to nearly eight millennia, to Peru, where Pakucho meant brown cotton in ancient Inca. Today, native~spun Pakucho cotton is grown in natural, cream, beige, brown, avocado and mauve shades. No pesticides, herbicides or other agri~chemicals are used to grow or color these yarns. All harvesting and color sorting is done by hand, just as it has been since the domestication of cotton in Peruover 4,500 years ago." - James M. Vreeland Jr.
Another very important point worth mentioning is that Peru does not allow Genetically Modified Organisms (Genetically Engineered) seed or crops into their country. This way there is no risk of cross contamination keeping the fiber organic with no risk. GMOs are a complete and utter devastation to natural and organic crops in the US and many other countries around the world. Perfect for those with allergies or sensitive skin.
This listing is for your choice of 2 ounces any color. The deeper, rarest colors are priced higher than the lighter, less rare. If you want more than 2 oz of any one kind I can set up a listing for you for the larger amount. I will also be putting up a sampler including all (or as many as I can get at any one time) colors, so that you can see the subtle and more defined differences is this wonderful product. Choose Rich Cinnamon Chocolate (Shown alone in 2nd picture), Golden Brown (Shown in 3rd Picture), Variegated Chocolate (4th Picture - much like Cafe' Au Lait' in Ashland Bay's merino color) or Forest Mist, a light earthy green color (last picture), from drop - down box at upper right. More picture colors coming soon.
Please note that different cotton crops produce varying colors. So when buying the sliver, buy enough for your whole project to avoid color variation. Also, the color grown sliver comes more natural and a bit lighter then the Pakucho yarns do, especially the greens. This gives the spinner or eventual crafter the option to make an item and keep the color as is or deepen your finished product with hot water and machine drying. This gives you creative control with the added benefit of the color change. Just have fun with it!
