In early 2022 USPS began imposing a length surcharge on any package 22" or over ($4) and an even larger surcharge on packages 30" or over ($9). This is a good opportunity to get inexpensive long items such as shuttles, pick up and lease sticks, etc... since the base shipping is high and the other items won't add significantly to the weight. I would refund overages on the additional items since the surcharge is only added once to each package.
Warp Stick Ties will can go First Class with cheap shipping!
Often used in pairs, lease sticks are used to hold the warp cross and they are indispensable when needing to repair broken ends quickly and efficiently - Having the lease always at the ready greatly simplifies the process and lessens the frustration of stopping to make repairs. These can be used on any model loom to their own length measurement in weaving width and over by just a bit. So a 27" lease stick would typically be used on a loom with 27" or less in weaving width and the 39" on any loom with a weaving width of 39" or less. These sticks will be an odd measurement, frequently with an extra 1/2" - 1 1/2" or more, depending on the size/loom model, since they would typically hand out the sides of the loom a bit and actually cover more than just the weaving width. They are made by Ashford this way and they can stick out the sides of the warp just a bit to keep warp threads from sliding off. A smooth rounded or beveled edge allows them to be slipped effortlessly through your shed. As an example of simplistic efficiency - By slipping two of these handy lightweight sticks through the opening of the lease cross made while winding a warp, and tying the ends of the sticks together, all the warp ends stay perfectly in order throughout the process of dressing the loom. After beaming the warp, with the warp still under tension, you can tie the back lease stick to the back beam. Then, when threading the heddles, simply take each thread in order by going to the cross in between the two lease sticks and picking up the next thread. Lease sticks separate the threads in a way that clearly shows which thread is next. Many weavers always weave with the lease sticks in and don’t remove them until the end of the warp comes over the back beam. Lease sticks are ESPECIALLY helpful if you're working with a warp in less than good condition - perhaps some twists or loose ends....
Jack warp Sticks come 10 to a pack so you'll be getting 10 for $45.
Last photo is a package (12) warp/lease stick ties by Ashford. (if buying only warp stick ties, $3.00 in shipping overages will be refunded.)
***Early in 2022, USPS imposed a length surcharge on packages 22" and over ($4) and a bigger surcharge on packages 30" and over ($15). It's a good time to fill the space in these boxes with extra/inexpensive items since the surcharge is only applied once to each package - so stock up on other lightweight long items such as lease/pickup sticks, shuttles, etc... I will refund overages on all after the first surcharge.
They greatly speed up repair and weaving when warp threads break.
They separate warp ends that might twist around each other.
They allow you to feel any twists in the warp threads so you can delicately work them out before breakage or tension problems happen.
They are the lease for tying on new warp threads precisely in order.
They are not there to even out the warp tension as you may have learned.
Pictures show how lease sticks are used. Sold singly or by the pair - choose size from drop down box at upper right. Some lengths are made by Ashford (such as the 24" and 32" for use with their Rigid Heddle looms. Others may be made by Glimakra or Schacht, so style may change from one size/company to another. Choose by the width of your loom. 12" Katie Lease Sticks are lacquered. All lease sticks are classified by their "weaving width", which is not the same as the lease stick length. They will always be longer than the weaving width so that they stick out the sides for easy removal.
Because of their length, they must ship via Priority Mail as opposed to First Class. Take advantage of combining shipping - a pair ships for the same price as one and additional lease sticks (or pairs) ship for only $3.95. 12" and 16" lease sticks can ship First Class if preferred and overages can be refunded.
