Description of each fiber type below.

CHEVIOT Wool Top is a beautiful natural white color. The micron count is between 27-33. Cheviot is a main British wool breed. The wool top is open without being slippery making it an excellent wool for beginner spinners, with typical staple length of 4 - 5". The wool practically spins itself. The yarn produced from Cheviot wool is a pleasure to knit, crochet and weave with. Great for plying, it carries a nice "bounce" to it. Also good dyeing top, but will have more of a matte finish than the longwools.

JACOB Wool Top - Jacob sheep are sometimes referred to as the spotted sheep. The brown select Jacob wool has been hand picked from the fleece and processed to keep the rich brown color. The micron count ranges between 25-35 and staple is typically 4 - 7". Jacob is easy to spin and producted a springy yarn. Temporarily out of stock.

BLUE FACE LEICESTER - A VERY Popular British luster longwool. 25-27 microns, staple length 4 ¼ inches, 110 mm. The fiber feels finer than the micron count would suggest. The luster promotes intense dye results. Choose from White, Dark (a deep brown) or Multi.

WENSLEYDALE - HIGH luster longwool. 30-36 microns with staple length of 7 inches (180 mm). Shiny wool that takes dye very well, producing intense rich colors. Because of its length, yarns with low twist work out well.

SHETLAND - A Delicious Heritage of Color! The wonderful range of natural colors and the high quality of Shetland fleece have traditionally been important to the wool industry of the Shetland Islands. Nice staple and hand. Typically available in cream, fawn, gray and black/brown

SHETLAND-MOORIT - Richly colored chocolate, generous staple length and excellent wool for handspinners and felters.

POLWORTH - Polwarth fiber has a longer staple length from it’s Lincoln DNA. Easier to spin with longer staple length. Micron count between 22-25. Definitely next to skin softness. Noted for its elasticity, and durability, it is still considered a delicate feeling fiber with bounce and drape.

FALKLAND - Micron 26, staple length 4-6 inches, 100-115 mm. The base flock of the Falkland wool is Corridale, Polwarth and Dohne Merino. These breeds were developed for dual purpose, meat and wool production and are selectively bred for the ability to survive in the harsh climate of the Falkland Islands. The upside of the harsh climate is that insects and disease associated with them are not a problem. The wool is almost guaranteed to be chemical free. Since there are no known sheep diseases in the Falkland Islands, the sheep are never dipped and never go through mulesing.

CORRIEDALE CROSS- Popular, durable wool. 27.5 micron, Staple length typically 3 1/2" (90 mm), with a surprisingly soft hand. Corriedale Cross is one of the natural colored wool fibers offered by Ashland Bay. This value priced yarn is excellent for spinning and felting. Color is more cream than white. Dyes well and easily drafted for spinning.

GRAY GOTLAND - This wool is from the Gotland Island, Sweden. Wool is 35 microns, 6 ½ inch staple length. Lustrous, beautiful silvery shiny top. Felts fast and easy! The breed was first established on the Swedish island of Gotland by the Vikings with Karakul and Romanov sheep brought back from expeditions deep into Russia and crossed with the native landrace sheep. Love this fiber.

TARGHEE - USA sourced and processed, this batch of Targhee has a fabulous hand at only 23 micron. Targhee is a domestically grown wool that is processed in the United States. The Targhee breed was developed at the Experimental Sheep Station in Dubois, Idaho in the mid 1900’s. The foundation stock were ewes of Rambouillet, Corriedale, and Lincoln bloodlines bred back to Rambouillet rams. Our wool has been selected specifically for Ashland Bay’s Targhee yarn program and is 23/23.5 microns.

RAMBOUILLET - USA sourced and processed, this lovely fiber rivals merino in its hand with a 21.5 micron. Staple length is similar also to merino at 2 3/4 - 3".
