In Handwoven Home, weaving expert Liz Gipson guides you through the tools and techniques you’ll need to weave all of your personalized textiles on the most popular loom on the market—the rigid-heddle loom. You’ll cover all the basics of rigid-heddle weaving like choosing the right yarn for your project, and achieving your desired cloth type and the perfect drape.

Each of the 20+ projects inside starts with a simple square or rectangle and involves little to no sewing, shaping, or loom waste, making each one perfect for the rigid-heddle loom. You’ll learn how to weave multiple towels from one warp with the Four Looks Kitchen Towels, how to create a sturdy rug of wide fabric with the Fabric Stash Rag Rug, and how to finish each project with a polished, professional look. Whether you’re making textiles for yourself or as a gift, inside you’ll find everything you need to create a woven personal touch for any room.

A WEAVER'S BOOK OF 8-SHAFT PATTERNS: From the Friends of Handwoven, Edited by Carol Strickler. This must-have draft book contains almost 1000 different patterns on more than 25 weave structures. Introductory chapters provide a thorough understanding of how each structure works. This book is like Marguerite Porter Davison’s pattern book, but for 8 shafts. Not only does it include a plethora of drafts, Ms. Strickler writes clear explanations of each structure at the beginning of each chapter. This is a wonderful way to explore the vast potential of 8-shaft looms.

CARD WEAVING & TABLET WEAVING: Russell E Groff. Lovingly typed up using a Selectric italic face, and hand-illustrated with B&W photos of setups and samples, this labor of love from Robin & Russ Handweavers, 1969, is as splendid an introduction to tablet weaving as other more finely polished and professionally published offerings. The information in this book is amazing, with great detail in patterns. What a delight to have a piece of Mr. Groff's early work.

INVENTIVE WEAVING ON A LITTLE LOOM: Rigid-heddle weaving is simple to learn, is easy to master, and offers a lifetime of possibilities to discover! Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom covers everything rigid-heddle weavers need to know about the craft, from the basics — how to select a loom, set it up, and get started — to a wide variety of fun techniques that yield beautiful results. Begin by exploring a variety of weave structures, including finger-manipulated laces, tapestry, and color play with stripes, plaids, and multicolor yarns. Then move on to more complex designs and irresistible projects, from pillows and curtains to bags, shawls, and even jewelry. Explore warp-face patterning, weft-pile weaving, weaving with fine threads, woven shibori, shadow weave, and the textural effects you can create with different yarns and with wire and conductive thread. Everything you need to know is here, with fully illustrated step-by-step instructions to ensure success.

THE WEAVERS IDEA BOOK: As a guide for beginners and practiced weavers Jane Patrick's book is inspirational. Although specifically aimed at the rigid heddle loom, the 200 pages hold a wealth of information on weave structures and patterns that can be used on many looms. The spiral bound, textbook-style layout is good, with clear section separation, and the chapters take you up a hierarchy of difficulty. I felt comfortable with plain, finger-controlled and pick up weaves, then I marvelled in awe at sections on warp and weft-faced frabrics and working with two heddles. There is a nod to garment and item construction in the guise of a few set pieces, but the book's real strength is in opening a treasure chest of weaving possibility to new or relatively inexperienced weavers. Each section provides a soft kaleidoscope of samples which I have already been tempted to replicate. The book will doubtless remain a good source book to refer to for new creative ideas and inspiration. Use one of the world's simplest tools to explore the creative possibilities of cloth! The Weaver's Idea Book presents a variety of patterns for simple rigid-heddle and harness looms, complete with sample swatches for drafts and project ideas. Beginning and experienced weavers on the lookout for new weave structure patterns will be drawn to the multitude of designs in The Weaver's Idea Book.
