For serious fiber carding and batt production, The Standard/Classic Louet Drum Carders are 8" wide and combine a large 10" diameter drum for huge carding capacity that makes a a batt of 8 by 30 inches. The intermeshing teeth work for great performance, allowing you to card fibers without pre-teasing. It literally "eats from your hand".
Louet Carders have enclosed gearboxes that assures smooth carding operation, while the extra high, flexible, teeth allow for a heavier batt than other drum carders as well as a high carding efficiency. Since the Louet drum carder uses a gear drive, there is no adjustment necessary, and no belts to slip or wear out. All Louet drum carders come with doffer brush & pin as well as 2 clamps to hold to your table top or other sturdy work surface.
An instruction manual written by well known author and fiber artist Deb Menz is included with all drumcarders.
The Louet Drumcarders are made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Lou?t carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes (except on the Elite) are enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system.
For drumcarders it is common to mention the gear ratio that drives the licker-in when you rotate the large drum. However, what really counts for carding is the ratio of the surface speed of both drums, because the difference of surface speed does the carding. You get this surface speed ratio by multiplying the gear ratio with the ratio of the diameters of the large drum and the licker-in.
LOUET STANDARD CLASSIC DRUM CARDER
Designed for the fiber artists who want to be able to perform a range of techniques on their carder. A fine (72 tpi) carding cloth will handle medium-fine, medium and coarse fibers. This surface speed ratio is 9:1 making this carder suitable for all fibers as well as those yummy add ins for your varied or sparkle batts. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louët carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. The licker-in drum of the Elite carder has a short needle carding cloth that is spirally attached to it so it can efficiently feed a variety of fibers onto the large drum and avoids the waste of costly fibers. The gearbox, is enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system.
Also available in the Extra Large Model for pumping out those production batts for serious spinning projects. This new drum is almost 12" with standard 72 TPI cloth. The carder is one and a half times wider than the Standard Drum Carder for your large carding projects. The drum itself measures 10.5" in diameter and has a surface speed ratio of 12:1. Includes: Doffer pin, brush, and clamps.
The licker-in drum can also be adjusted closer or further from the drum depending on the fibers you are carding. Two gear ratios of 1 to 6 and 1 to 9 allow you to blend different fibers with ease and without fibers gulping on or getting damaged. An extra large slanted in-feed tray allows you to arrange the fibers before carding. The Elite carder is designed to do a range of tasks - it can perform the basic carding tasks for all your fleeces, it is great blending colors and it can also easily blend a variety of fibers into unique batts for spinning and felting.
