***Ashford Variable Dent Reeds also fit Kromski Harp Forte looms - take advantage of the wider DPI range that Ashford offers - 2.5 DPI for the really thick yarns/ribbons and 15 DPI for the ultra fine yarns/threads.***
If you have been wanting to make a project using using a combinations of different weight/size yarns you have on a rigid heddle loom this is the EASY answer to your needs. With the Ashford Variable Dent Reed, you can assemble your own rigid heddle reed for their Rigid Heddle Looms/SampleIt/Knitters Looms with different setts for different parts of the warp. The Variable Dent reed comes with an assortment of sections, in two sizes - 4" & 2" wide of EACH DPI - 2.5 DPI, 5 DPI, 7.5 DPI, 10 DPI, 12 DPI, and 15 DPI. So you get a TON of options here - Mix and match them to create a reed that will space the yarns the way you want them.
Reeds/reed sections are available for differing yarns. The 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10dpi (10, 20, 30 and 40/10cm) reeds feature the wide eye for novelty yarns. The fine 12.5dpi (50/10cm) and the NEW extra fine 15dpi (60/10) reeds are also available. Made from strong, durable nylon with Silver Beech rails. The reeds come in 30cm, 50cm and 70cm (12ins, 20ins and 28ins) widths. You can use different dents to create different setts in the same reed. This is a great way to thread stripes of thick and thin yarns or to create different densities in a fabric, as shown in the fourth picture.
Many of you were probably thrilled to hear the news that Ashford now has a variable dent reed available for both the SampleIt Looms (in both sizes - 8" width and the new 10" width) and all of their Rigid Heddle Looms. But what is it, what exactly does this mean for your weaving experience, and how do you go about using it?
First of all, what is it? Simply put, the variable dent reed is a rigid heddle reed with interchangeable 2.5, 5, 7.5 10, 12.5 and 15 dent sections of reed. You can mix and match these sections to create your own custom reed. The number of segments you receive varies with the length of the reed. The overall weaving width will be slightly narrower than a traditional reed.
Let’s talk about when you might choose to use the variable dent reed. One of the most obvious ways would be to combine yarns of different weights in the same warp. Another option would be to create a crammed and spaced effect. This could be done either with yarn of the same weight across the reed, spaced differently, or you could choose to experiment with yarns of different weights at different setts. The variable dent reed is an opportunity to experiment and expand your weaving options in a way that is gentle on your yarn.
